As we embrace the arrival of spring in 2024, there’s an undeniable sense of freshness and mystery in the air, just like every year. It’s during those fleeting moments when we’re lost in the depths of slumber, that the magic of this season unfolds, in the gaps of our consciousness. The warm embrace of the unseen breeze, the tender sprouts breaking through the earth, and the gentle drizzle that quietly dances down—nature orchestrates a symphony of renewal, even when we’re not consciously aware.
2024년 봄은 매년 맞이하는 봄이 그렇듯 새롭고, 또 신비롭다. 추위가 사그라들고 땅이 부드러워지는 이 계절의 특별함은 우리가 잠든 사이, 그 의식의 공백기에 있다. 우리가 눈치채지 못 한 새에 드리워지는 따듯한 공기, 흙을 뚫고 나오는 새싹, 조용히 내리는 이슬비. 우리가 의식하지 않아도 세상은 봄을 불러일으키기 위한 공모를 한다. 이번 봄, 이 신비로운 세계를 향한 문을 열어줄 일곱명의 작가들과 함께 열어본다. 강세희, 김영미, 김성철, 와다 치즈, 영재, 몽몽, 그리고 착 작가들과 함께 김현주갤러리는 겨울과 봄을 잇는 전시를 기획했다.

Kim’s art revolves around feline protagonists, intriguingly portrayed as cats without eyes, which seemingly invites us to perceive the world not through mere vision, but through the lens of the heart. Kim Sungchul’s works depict somewhat heavy themes such as desire and pain in a bizarre and illustrative manner, aiming to lessen the bleakness of the themes they convey and elevate them through the aesthetics of curves, distortion, and monotonous color tones. By adding a sense of enigma and anatomical depiction to facial expressions or depictions of the human body, the artist compels us to have a different perspective when looking at animals–including humans–as human beings. Additionally, the artist compresses the process of overcoming these somber themes, offering solace and hope like a ray of sunlight in a cold winter.
김성철의 작품은 욕망과 고통과 같은 다소 무거운 주제를 기괴하고 묘사적인 방식으로 담아내며, 그가 전달하는 주제의 암울함을 완화하고 곡선, 왜곡, 단조로운 색조의 미학을 통해 승화시키고자 합니다. 얼굴 표정이나 인체 묘사에 신비로움과 해부학적 표현을 더함으로써, 작가는 우리가 동물—그리고 인간을 포함한—을 바라보는 시각을 새롭게 하도록 강요합니다. 또한 작가는 이러한 우울한 주제를 극복하는 과정을 압축하여, 마치 추운 겨울 속 햇살 한 줄기처럼 위로와 희망을 선사합니다.

The artwork series “Together with You” is a deeply poetic series that exhibits a strong sense of continuity. Despite its monochromatic tone, the warmth that emanates from the artwork is a result of the artist’s skillful technique and storytelling. The presence of a narrator, embodied by a cat, adds an intriguing element as if one is listening to a secret tale being whispered. This warmth can be likened to the gentle and tender emotions one feels in the springtime.

The continuity and harmony of angles and curves, despite their architectural nature, display an abstract and restrained strength. Much like the segments of an earthworm expanding and contracting with movement, this subtle repetition of tonal divisions imparts a painterly quality to the meticulously calculated underdrawing, emphasizing both spatial depth and movement, and offering visual delight.
라인에서 나오는 연속성, 직각과 곡선의 조화, 그리고 단면적 도면에서 비치는 공간감. 건축적임에도 불구하고 착 작가의 드로잉들은 추상적이고 절제된 힘을 보여준다. 마치 지렁이의 세그먼트가 움직임에 따라 줄어들고 늘어나듯, 이 오묘한 농도의 반복적 분할이 깨끗하게 계산된 밑그림에 회화적 요소를 주어 공간감과 움직임을 강조하며 시각적 즐거움을 준다.

In a scene reminiscent of a fairytale, a creature, akin to a fairy, releases a single golden tear that serves as solace for a butterfly delicately perched upon her head. The butterfly, whose wings have lost their power, finds comfort and nourishment in this act of compassion. The beauty of love, expressed through idleness and a caring spirit, radiates with a gentle glow as the day transitions into dusk.
동화 속 한 장면을 연상시키듯, 요정과 닮은 한 존재가 단 하나의 황금빛 눈물을 흘립니다. 그 눈물은 그녀의 머리 위에 섬세하게 앉아 있는 나비에게 위안이 됩니다. 날개가 힘을 잃은 나비는 이 자비로운 행위 속에서 안식과 생명을 얻습니다. 게으름 속에서도 배려하는 마음을 통해 드러나는 사랑의 아름다움은, 해가 저물어가는 시간 속에서 부드럽게 빛납니다.
