Art is a medium, as much as music, dance, or a gesture is. It is inherently personal: the creation is inseparable from the creator, unable to mask the essence of its maker. It is with this very personal nature that we resonate with, and this is why we are inclined to human-created art as opposed to those generated. The essence is in the ‘being’, not the ‘product’.

We feel this intuitive connection with Hashimoto’s paintings. The inspirations stem from the artist’s personal belief in humanity and peace, and these cherished ideals are transferred to us. The harmonization of colors and textures speak to us in primal forms of comfort. Straightforward and inviting nature of these images relate to us. These paintings celebrate life as the dance of chaos that it is. Speaking through this wholehearted joy encourages us to keep love and peace in the dialogue. The weight of living often wraps us in a cocoon of cynicality and stoicism, but it is with this incredible human ability to recognize and create joy that we move forward with love, and not hate.

Hashimoto’s lighthearted and vibrant paintings remind us of this magnificent truth. Creatures and colors open themselves up, showering us with love and wishing us peace. This intuitive approach allows for an organic exchange of empathy and joy, which speaks to our innate humanity. In turn, we feel safe to embrace this love and peace, to carry this value within us.

“I always have something to say, an “urge to draw a picture”, in my heart. The characteristic images of the artworks are decided in my mind. I catch a motif that is easy to understand, but they return to me as unique and adorable images. It is easy to empathize with them myself, brightly and naturally. Sometimes the motives express us.”

This natural transference of philanthropy reveals itself with ease. It reminds us that understanding and empathy should be easy, and it is possible to carry on with love in our hearts. This exhibition celebrates the life of Kazuya Hashimoto and the world within canvas he let us into. It highlights the power of human connection that can revive joy and peace, even through the darkest of times. Even without knowing anything about the artist, the essence he embedded into these paintings give us just that: love, and peace

2024년 7월 오사카에서 49세의 나이로 생을 마감한 카즈야 하시모토 (Kazuya Hashimoto / 橋本和哉 1975~2024)를 회고하는 전시 『Love and Peace 展』은 2010년부터 김현주갤러리와 함께 해온 하시모토의 경쾌하고 평화로운 세계를 기념하고 조망하며, 지난 15년간 성원을 보내온 관객들과 더불어 새로운 이들에게도 그의 예술적 세계를 알리는 자리이다.

교토조형예술대학에서 Visual Design을 전공한 하시모토는 계획된 구성보다는 자유롭게 생겨난 형태들이 하나의 미적인 균형을 이루는 구성을 주도했다. 다른 음정을 가진 각각의 요소들이 서로를 돋보이게 하면서도 조화를 이루는 작품이 순수하고 원초적인 비언어적 소통을 가능하게 해왔다. 누군가의 웃음이 전이되어 나의 즐거움이 될 수 있듯이, 그의 작품 속에 보이는 진심어리고 밝은 언어는 즉각적이고 자연스럽게 스며들었었던 것이다. 우리가 갈망하는 사랑 평화와 같은 부분을 조명한 듯 보여졌던 작품들이 객관적 시선에서는 상반되었던 하시모토의 삶과 대비되어 더욱 그 울림이 있었다. 살아간다는 것의 무게는 종종 우리를 냉소나 무감각으로 감싸지만 그 속에서도 재미와 평화를 찾고 나누는 고유한 성질을 통해 우리는 증오가 아닌 사랑으로 나아갈 수 있는 것을 상기시키듯 하다.

“나는 언제나 마음속에 무언가 말하고 싶은 것, ‘그림을 그리고 싶다는 충동’을 가지고 있다. 작품의 특징적인 이미지는 머릿속에서 이미 결정된다. 이해하기 쉬운 모티프를 붙잡지만, 그것들은 다시 나에게 독특하고 사랑스러운 이미지로 돌아온다. 나 스스로도 밝고 자연스럽게 공감할 수 있다. 때로는 그 모티프들이 우리 자신을 표현하기도 한다.”

작가의 작품을 대하는 이와 같은 태도처럼 하시모토의 작품은 밝고 자연스러운 공감을 자아냄으로써 예술이 지닌 교류의 성질을 긍정한다. 본 전시에서는 카즈야 하시모토의 삶과 그가 우리를 초대했던 캔버스 속 세계를 기억하며 사후에도 영속성(永續性)을 갖는 예술의 가치를 확인할 수 있다.

하시모토는 지난 2024년 7월, 작고하였으며 유족으로부터 정확한 사인은 알 수 없으나 진단받지 못한 폐암이 있었음을 전해들었다. 일본 오사카에서 생활고를 겪으면서도 행복하고 기분 좋은 이미지들을 만들어낸 손끝에는 순수 열정과 평화에 대한 신념이 떠나지 않았다. 이번 회고전의 제목 ‘Love and Peace’는 카즈야 하시모토가 예술에 빗대어 전하는 사랑과 평화를 의미한다. 더불어 지난 15년간 함께해온 고마움과 마지막 가는 길에 평안을 기원하는 팬들의 인사가 전해지기를 바란다.
